Cancer help for kids in Mali

Krebsallianz delivered chemotherapies and pain medications to Mali. The drugs were used for children whose families cannot afford expensive cancer medicines.

The medicines were sent to the Koutiala Hospital for Women and Children in Koutiala City. As the doctor in charge, Dr. Brett MacLean writes, “Normally children in Mali with cancer are left to die slow, painful deaths hidden away inside their small, mud homes.”

Thanks to the medicines provided by Krebsallianz, Dr. MacLean can now help many of those children. Because many forms of cancer like leukemia, lymphomas and bone cancer can be well treated with children. “When curative care is not possible we are able to provide excellent pain relief through your donation, so that their passing is in peace, comfort, and dignity instead of suffering and shame.”

Free medicines for children from poor families

Often cancer in Africa is equal to a death sentence. Many of those affected only consult a doctor when the cancer is at a very late stage. Children with cancer are hidden. This has many reasons: People are ashamed that they got ill. They seek help from traditional healers. Moreover, they cannot afford the treatment. And when a child gets sick, the parents must take the hard decision whether to invest their little money in the future of their healthy children or the treatment of the sick child.

Thank-you letter from Mali to Krebsallianz

Thanks to Krebsallianz, many children in the Koutiala Hospital can be helped with free cancer and pain medicines. As each child should have a chance to get healthy, even if the family is poor. “We at the Koutiala Hospital would like to express our deepest gratitude to Krebsallianz and its donors” writes Dr. MacLean.
